The Law Guide: Your guide to careers with a law degree

Kate Balazs

A law degree can take your career anywhere

There is a wealth of opportunity for law graduates and students to pursue a career off the traditional path.

“A career in a law firm is rewarding but it is not the only career path open to law graduates,” said The Law Society of NSW President Pauline Wright.

The Law Guide is a comprehensive publication by The Law Society of NSW and GradAustralia that gives law students insight into the broad range of career options available with a law degree.

The Guide covers the various key practice areas in commercial law as well as non-legal career specialisations and alternative legal careers in different sectors, from legal academia and New Law to in-house roles in the public and corporate sectors.

Other sectors students may not have previously considered include: accounting and advisory, banking and financial services, consulting, engineering, mining and resources, transport and logistics.

“Could you imagine marrying a love of fashion or architecture with a law degree to pursue a career in the retail or construction industries,” Ms Wright said. “Both need solicitors for their in-house legal teams but also for more diverse roles including in advisory, managerial and project management.

The Guide also features practical advice and personal insights into what life on the job is really like from professionals working in a variety of legal and non-legal industries as well as comprehensive information about how to get hired, key resources and support services.
