KPMG is a global network of professional firms providing Audit, Tax and Advisory services.
I’m currently working in the Advisory division, specifically in Management Consulting within the Technology Risk & Assurance service line. The Technology Risk & Assurance team is responsible for helping clients to better comprehend and manage technology, cyber and information risks. In particular, my team helps clients with major IT investments through project risk management support; identifying and managing cyber security and other technology and information risks; enhancing our clients’ business resilience; improving our clients’ understanding and management of risk in technology through designing and implementing effective controls over technology assets and assisting our clients to meet their IT compliance and governance obligations in a way that enhances their business objectives. My role as a Consultant consists of conducting meetings with clients to gain an understanding of the processes, IT controls and governance that the business has in place, followed by collating evidence of such processes and controls, examining and testing the evidence to ensure compliance with laws, regulations and industry standards. Another key aspect of my role is to identify risks in the process of examining the evidence obtained from clients and providing advise on how to better manage these risks.
I was born and raised in Germany and moved to Australia in 2006. Once I moved to Australia, I attended Thomastown Secondary College, where I completed my secondary education. Due to my academics and leadership skills throughout VCE, I was awarded a Cadetship with DOXA Youth Foundation. DOXA provided me with a placement opportunity at Allens, a Top-Tier Law firm. My placement turned into a part-time job during University semesters and a full-time job during University holidays. In the 5 years that I worked at Allens, I worked as a Paralegal in Competition Law and Applied Legal Technology as well as the IT department simultaneously. After 5 years of working at Allens, I worked as a Paralegal at the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office, where I mainly worked on Royal Commissions and Public Inquests. In my final year of University, I applied for a role at KPMG and was successful. I started working at KPMG right after my exams and have been working here for 8 months now.
Yes definitely! I studied Law and Arts (Psychology Major) at University and worked in the legal field and in IT, however I am the only one in my team with this degree combination. Our team consists of people with diverse backgrounds such as Commerce, IT, Business and Engineering amongst other degrees. We work in such a collaborative environment where diverse outlooks and views on concepts and ideas allow us to grow and succeed. The most important skills to have in my role are the ability to communicate clearly and effectively as well as problem-solving skills!
The greatest thing about my job is the fact that I’m constantly working on new jobs and meeting new people. This really allows me to grow both at a personal and professional level. I think the culture and people at KPMG are really great and are a big reason as to why I love my job.
As with most jobs, there are times where the jobs I work on require me to work some additional hours, however KPMG has a really good work-life balance generally, so I wouldn’t necessary say that this a limitation but rather additional time that allows me to build strong relationships with clients and gain skills and deeper knowledge of my role and client needs.
Network, network, network! I can really say that networking is key, and many students tend to not do this until the end of their degree when they start looking for jobs; but the earlier you start networking, the more of a chance you have to get your dream job!
